Supplies Needed for this Project :
- Wooden snowflake cutouts
- Brown paint
- Ribbon
- Puffy paint
- Chunky snow glitter
- Fine iridescent glitter
- Hot glue
Step One : Paint the Snowflake
Let’s start off these ornaments with a little paint. I used Nutmeg brown from Apple Barrel. A great way to paint these wooden cutouts is with small pieces of sponge. A brush can leave excess paint in the openings of the cutout. A sponge helps prevent that. But use what you have of course.

You’ll notice bubbles in the paint here, but it’s because I dabbed the sponge instead of using brush strokes. I did that because it quickly coated the snowflake and I like shortcuts. To clear these bubbles, just use light brush strokes with an almost dry sponge for the second coat.
Step Two : Add the Ribbon
After your second coat is dry and both sides are painted, add your ribbon using a lark’s head knot. Double up your ribbon and insert either end into the hole in the cutout and follow that video linked above to see how to complete the knot if you’re unfamiliar. The ends of your ribbon will be open, as shown below, so use some hot glue to attach the ends together.

You don’t have to use that knot, you can just knot it how you normally would. Completely up to you!
Step Three : Add Puffy Paint
Oh, how this part brings back memories! My childhood was filled with puff paint crafts, so I thoroughly enjoyed decorating these snowflakes with it. I started by adding straight lines as shown.

Then just fill it in, one ‘arm’ at a time. What do you even call the appendages of a snowflake? Ha. It might look messy now, but trust me, once you add the glitter, all will be well once again.

Step Four : Add the Glitter
Here’s the fun part! I found this chunky tinsel glitter from Hobby Lobby and it was perfect for these ‘cookies’! Sprinkle it on the wet puff paint, and shake off the excess. Next, sprinkle on the extra fine glitter, which will fill in where the larger chunky glitter could not get. It’s the perfect combination! Make sure to use two different plates OR clean up each glitter before using the other, so you don’t waste them.

Check out how they look with all that yummy glitter!! Let the snowflake dry for several hours. It takes a while for that puff paint to fully dry, so be patient. I let them sit overnight and they were ready to go on my Gingerbread Christmas Tree the next day!

This was about the time that I glued the ends of my ribbon hanger together, but you can do that at any point of course. Aren’t they so pretty on our Gingerbread Christmas Tree?? See the full tree at that link above.
