Maybe pink and red are not your thing when it comes to Valentine’s Day. Well, we have something in common then. I want some heart decor for my home, but pinks and red just don’t vibe with the rest of my decor. Those items are pretty, but I prefer neutrals, so I created this Twisted Jute Heart Canvas! This is also an inspirational piece, so I wanted to share it with you to remind you how much God loves us. Oh, how He loves us! How He loves us, oh! Make sure to check out our other Valentine’s Crafts while you’re here!
Supplies needed for this project :
- 8×10″ stretched canvas
- wired jute
- scrapbook paper
- water pen
- mod podge
- black paint
- wooden word stickers
- wooden heart charms
- wooden dowel
- hot glue gun
- tacky glue
- scissors
- paint brushes
1- Trim Scrapbook Paper
First, I used the canvas to trace the amount of scrapbook paper that I would need, and then cut the scrapbook paper.

2 – Paint the Canvas
Next, I painted my canvas with black acrylic paint. You can use chalk paint or even spray paint if you prefer. If you’re using a different color scrapbook paper, use a completely different color. Make it your own!

3 – Using the Water Pen
While I was letting that dry, I distressed the edges of my scrapbook paper using a water pen. These things are amazing! You can use them for this technique or for watercolor painting, etc. They are great to have in your craft toolbox!

Add water to the chamber, then just squeeze the sides as you’re “painting” the edges of your paper. Once they are thoroughly moistened, you can start to rip the edges away.

It creates a fun ragged edge, which I love! (Sorry about the blurry shot)

4 – Let’s Break out the Mod Podge
After your canvas is dry, add a pretty thick layer of mod podge. Before it dries, lay your prepared scrapbook paper on the canvas and press down thoroughly. Turn it over and press from the other side so you are creating a good seal between the paper and the canvas. Once you’ve adhered your paper, and it has dried well, add a layer of mod podge to the top to seal everything.

5 – Let’s Have Fun with Wired Jute & Create our Heart
Now, we’re going to be working with the wired jute. You can get this at Dollar General, Dollar Tree, or Hobby Lobby. They have a large package of it at Dollar General for $3.50! Very good deal! The first thing you need to do is glue your cut ends, so your jute does not unravel, because it will.

Grab one of your silicon finger protectors, add hot glue to the ends of the wired jute, then twist with the silicon until the glue hardens. Make sure to twist in the same direction that your jute is twisted around the wire.

Next, grab your wooden dowel and start wrapping a 2 foot section of the wired jute around it. Make sure to twist the dowel instead of the wired jute. This will prevent the jute from becoming unraveled. Trust me on this.

Lastly, form the two pieces of coiled wired jute into a heart shape, connecting the two pieces at the top and bottom, by interlocking the coils. You can use all one piece to do this, but your heart shape is going be more of a challenge to create. But this step is up to you! Use hot glue or permanent glue to attach it to your canvas.

6 – Let’s add Some Meaning to our Project
One of my favorite Christian songs is “How He Loves!” by David Crowder Band so these embellishments were perfect for this project. I started with this printable that I created that says Oh, how He loves us! FREE for you if you’d like to use it, too!

If you’re on a mobile device, just long tap on the words and a prompt should pop up giving you options and just select save image to download it. If you’re on a desktop or laptop, right click and those options will pop up for you, too. Print it on a regular 8.5×11 sheet of paper and it should fit perfectly across the top of an 8×10 canvas.

After you cut out the words, use the water pen again to rip around the words to create that ragged effect again if you wish. You could also just leave it straight if that is your style. Then using mod podge, add the words to the top of your canvas.

Once that is dry, add a coat of mod podge to the top of it to seal it. Then add some antique Waverly antique wax to the edges for a distressed look. I used my finger to soften it up a bit after adding it with a paint brush. Love the look it gave!

7 – Time to Finish our Canvas
I debated on adding more after this, because it has so much meaning already, and God’s love needs nothing more. His love is enough. Extra as I am though, and after seeking advice from my sissy, I decided to add a couple more details. First, I added a wooden word sticker to the bottom of the heart. Then I added small wooden open hearts to various parts of the canvas. I think it added the perfect amount of “extra”.

And that was it my friends! I love how it turned out! I hope that you love it, too and that it inspires you to make something similar for your Valentine’s home decor! Honestly, though, you could leave this out year round, which is what I plan to do! This will be going on our bedroom dresser.
