If you’ve ever finished a project and had a pile of scrap wood staring back at you, this one’s for you! In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to make a snowman hat shelf sitter from scrap wood — using leftover pieces from our pool deck build, no less! With a little black paint, some festive ribbon, and a few holiday embellishments, these simple wood scraps were transformed into a cozy piece of Christmas charm perfect for a shelf, mantel, or tiered tray.

Supplies Needed for This Project

  • Three pieces of similarly sized scrap wood (approx. 4″ long x 1.5″ wide)
  • Black paint (I used Waverly chalk paint in Ink)
  • Hot glue or wood glue
  • Ribbon (I used green, but use what matches your style!)
  • Greenery with a snowy finish
  • Miniature pinecones
  • Raffia

How to Make It

1. Start with scrap wood

I used three small pieces left over from building our pool deck. Each one is roughly 4 inches long and 1.5 inches wide.

Three small rectangular scrap wood pieces laid out on a craft mat beside a jar of Waverly black chalk paint, with greenery and a craft sign reading "My Eclectic Treasures" in the background.

2. Paint everything black

Give your pieces a good coat of black paint — I used Waverly’s chalk paint in Ink. Let them dry completely.

All three wood blocks fully painted black and drying on a piece of white paper on a cutting mat, with crafting supplies in the background.

3. Assemble the hat shape

Lay two pieces side-by-side vertically to form the top of the hat, then glue the third horizontally across the bottom to form the brim. I used hot glue, but wood glue works too if you have more patience than I did. 😉

Three black-painted wood blocks arranged to form a top hat shape — two standing vertically and one horizontally across the bottom.

4. Add the festive touches

Wrap a ribbon around the base of the top section for a classic snowman hat look. Then hot glue some snowy greenery, a tiny pinecone, and a raffia bow right where the brim meets the top.

Completed snowman hat shelf sitter decorated with green ribbon, frosted greenery, white berries, a miniature pinecone, and a raffia bow, set against a cozy white background with a green glass Christmas tree behind it.

And that’s it! You’ve got yourself a rustic little snowman hat shelf sitter, perfect for Christmas in July — or any winter display. I hope you enjoyed this project and that it inspires you to make something similar for your Christmas home decor. It’s such a fun way to use up leftover supplies and give them a second life.
