You know I love turning leftover bits into something beautiful—and this little patriotic hat made from scrap wood might be one of my favorite red, white, and blue projects yet! It’s budget-friendly, beginner-friendly, and full of farmhouse charm. Whether you’re decorating for Memorial Day, Independence Day, or just love summer Americana, this Scrap Wood Uncle Sam Hat is perfect for your shelf, entryway, or tiered tray. Supplies needed for this project :
- (3) 2×2” wood blocks, approx. 4″ tall (Get some on Amazon HERE!)
- Scrap corrugated cardboard for the star
- Red, white, and blue acrylic or chalk paint
- Jute twine
- Blue gingham ribbon and red polka dot ribbon
- Small white button
- Hot glue gun and glue
- Wood glue
- Optional: Scrabble tiles spelling “USA”
Tip: Most of these items you can find at your local craft store or even in your junk drawer—don’t be afraid to get creative!
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Paint Your Wood Blocks
Paint one block red, the other white, and your horizontal base blue. Let them dry completely.

2. Add the USA Scrabble Tiles
Glue Scrabble-style tiles across the blue base to spell USA or any other patriotic word. I placed them a little wonky, because that hides things if you don’t get them exactly straight.

3. Assemble the Hat
Glue the red and white blocks vertically onto the blue base. This gives you that iconic patriotic “top hat” shape.

4. Create and Add the Star
Cut a star from a scrap of cardboard (I used a corrugated piece for texture). I added a bit of white paint as a white wash, not completely coating the cardboard. It gives it that rustic look that is so popular!

5. Add Decorative Touches
Wrap twine and ribbon around the top for extra flair. I layered jute, blue gingham, satin white, and red polka dots.

Next, I added a small bow and finished it off with a white button.

6. Finish by Adding the Star
Last thing I did was add the painted corrugated star to the top!
