There’s something about summertime that brings out my love for red, white, and blue. Whether it’s the sound of the fireworks in the distance, flags waving in the breeze, or the scent of backyard barbeque in the air – it all makes me want to create something that captures that spirit. This Patriotic Flower Craft was just the thing. Make sure to check out our other Patriotic Crafts while you’re here!

I’ve made several versions of this flower design before (it’s a favorite in my craft room and others’!), but this time, I wanted to give it a bold, patriotic twist—something that felt cheerful, a little vintage, and full of handmade charm.

And let me just say… I’m in love with how it turned out.

Supplies Needed for this Project :

  • Patriotic Wooden Flower Kit
  • White and navy blue paint
  • Mod podge or other decoupage medium
  • Brown kraft paper or parchment paper
  • Mini crafting iron
  • Hot glue or wood glue
  • Mini sander
  • Paint brushes

A Classic Flower Gets a Patriotic Makeover

I started with a wooden flower shape that my husband hand-cuts using his scroll saw (no laser cutter here, just good old-fashioned craftsmanship!). Each flower has six petal pieces and two center circles.

Step 1: Prep Your Wooden Pieces

Lightly sand each petal and the round centers if needed. Lay out your pieces on a flat surface to get a feel for arrangement.

Step 2: Paint the Petals White

Paint the front (and the back if you’ll be making it two sided) of each petal with white acrylic or chalk paint (I used Waverly chalk paint in “Plaster”). Let dry completely before moving on.

Step 3: Cut and Prepare Your Napkin Design

Trace each petal onto the napkin and cut out the shapes. Choose your pattern layout—I used one single patriotic napkin and placed star sections and stripe sections intentionally for balance. Separate the napkin layers (you’ll only use the top printed layer).

Step 4: Apply the Napkin to the Petals (Decoupage Method)

Use Mod Podge to coat the front of each painted petal and let that dry completely. Something a little extra that I did, but is optional, I painted the edges navy blue. You can kind of see that in the picture below.

Carefully lay the napkin piece on top and smooth it out.

Cover with parchment or brown kraft paper and gently iron it down to eliminate wrinkles and help it adhere smoothly.

Step 5: Trim and Seal

Once the napkin is adhered and dry, gently sand around the edges to remove any excess. Add another thin layer of Mod Podge or sealer on top to protect the surface.

Step 6: Paint the Center Circle

Paint the round center navy blue (I used Apple Barrel in “Navy”). Let it dry thoroughly.

Step 7: Apply the Vinyl Decal

Choose your phrase: “Red White & Bloom” or “Let Freedom Bloom.” Use transfer tape to apply the vinyl decal neatly to the center circle.

Step 8: Assemble the Flower

Arrange your petals in a circle on your base or directly on a display surface. Use hot glue or wood glue to attach each petal, spacing them evenly. Glue the center circle in place last.

Want to Make it Two Sided?

If you want to make it two sided, just make sure your napkins are placed correctly on each side, because it will be permanently fixed once you glue it all together. Here is what the other side of mine looks like.

Creative Inspiration from the Community

One of my favorite things about this wooden flower project is how versatile it is. While I went with a bold, patriotic twist for my version, crafters from my community have taken these same pieces and created something completely their own—and the results are absolutely stunning!

Here are just a few creative takes:

A bright and cheerful classic: I couldn’t resist sharing this sweet photo of me and my husband (a.k.a. my scroll-saw guy!) holding one of our basic flower builds. This one’s painted in traditional daisy colors with crisp white petals and a sunny yellow center—perfect for spring or farmhouse decor.

Vintage and natural: Just That Perfect Piece gave their flower a beautifully weathered, crackled finish with a natural textured center made from dried pods, twine, and a delicate gold bee embellishment. It’s the perfect example of rustic elegance.

Whimsical and bold: Another stunner from Just That Perfect Piece featured embossed white petals, a dramatic black-and-white checkerboard center, and a pop of red from a butterfly accent. It’s a great reminder that you can dress these flowers up or down to match any aesthetic.

The possibilities are truly endless—and that’s the heart of why I love creating kits like these. No two flowers ever come out exactly the same, and that’s what makes them so special.

This project is beginner-friendly, but still satisfying for seasoned crafters who want to make something truly unique. You can display the finished flower on a shelf, porch, or even hang it as a door hanger.

And if you’re anything like me, you’ll enjoy how simple it is to bring it all together—with just a few supplies and a little creativity.
