Do you remember origami? It is the art of creating things with folded paper. A lost art is really what it is. Let’s bring it back! I show you every fold and even show you how to turn them into ornaments in this picture tutorial! Have fun!
You need four different size pieces of square paper. Use printed paper vs cardstock, because the folds will be easier, especially when you’re folding the smallest square. I made this one with the following size squares : 3″, 4″, 5″, and 6″.
So take your first square and fold it in half diagonally.
Then unfold it.
Next, fold it in half diagonally in the opposite direction.
Open that back up and you should have a folded X in your paper.
The next fold is going to be in half up and down. Make sure this fold is made with your picture showing right side up. My paper is a tree print, so I’m making sure to fold it with my trees facing the correct position, the paper is not sideways, in other words.
Because you’re not going to fold it sideways. This is the only fold that you’ll make side to side. Turn the paper over and you should have the following creases.
To make it easier to fold, crease that side to side fold in the other direction also as shown below.
Then turn your paper back over and this is what your paper and creases should look like. An X fold and a top to bottom fold.
Now, you’re going to fold in those side creases.
This is why you creased in the other direction. Push inward on both sides to create a tent affect.
Keep pushing inward on the sides and then press the front and back together.
Like this.
This is what your paper should look like from the bottom.
Now you’re going to start making your final folds. Make sure your print is facing up and your triangle is straight. Press your fingernail into the top angle of your triangle.
Then you are going to start folding the right side of your triangle, but only the top layer.
You want it to meet the center of your triangle.
Once your right side is folded, start the fold on the left side the same way.
Fold it until it meets the other side.
Use a bone folder or they sell these at some Dollar Trees. They are sold for vinyl use, but they come in handy here, too.
This is what your paper square should look like once it’s completely folded.
You should still be able to open the top folds.
And this is what it looks like on the back. See how to print is upside down?
Fold all four squares this same exact way.
Because you made them different sizes, you can turn them into trees by placing them together.
Start with your two largest sizes, and place the largest inside the back part of your second largest. I used tacky glue for this. You can use regular white glue, a glue stick, or even hot glue. Just use the hot glue sparingly and make sure it’s hot and you press them together immediately so you don’t have bumps.
This is what it should look like once all four pieces are put together.
I added a thin ribbon hanger by gluing it onto the very top on the right side.
To cover my ribbon and to add a star to my tree, I glued on this wooden snowflake star button.
The last thing I added was a jumbo craft stick that I had stained with antique wax and cut to fit. I used hot glue to attach it inside the very bottom triangle.
And here it is hanging on my >>red truck tree<<! It’s huge! I love it!
This is another one that I made with different print paper. I added a red button and ribbon hanger to this one.
These are so much fun to make! I’ve made several already! This was one that I made live on my Facebook page! I used a pearlescent button and the cream ribbon hanger for this one.
