Recently, I was in a crafting event where the participants exchanged thrifted items and were expected to create something with those items. The items I received were these mini vintage jello molds. I had lots of ideas rolling around in my head, but I decided to make a rain chain with them and I just love how it turned out! Let me show you how to make a rain chain!
What is a rain chain?
Alternatives to downspouts, rain chains guide water down from the gutter—with a lot more charm. – Shared from this article about rain chains.
Supplies needed for this rain chain diy:
- Small tin jello molds for donut shaped jello and cakes
- Small chain
- A hammer and a nail
- Wire pliers
Step one: Create holes in the molds
I used a hammer and a nail to make holes in the molds. Using a piece of scrap wood and a clamp, I positioned my mold so I could create my hole. If you have someone helping you, this would be better, so they could hold it while you make the holes. But most of the time it’s only me, so I have to get creative. Lol You can probably relate.
Step two: Separate your chain into sections
Next, you want to separate your chain into equal sections. The chain that I used was a small silver chain, so I created sections of four links each.
I made three for each mold, and I had six molds, so 18 total.
Step three: Add chains to your molds
After you separate your chain pieces, start adding them to your molds using your pliers to open them up, then to close them again.
You’ll have three chains hanging from each one like this.
Step four: Add the molds to your main chain
Now that you have all your chains attached to your molds, attach those three chains to the main chain. You will have to fish the main chain through the hole in the jello molds as you add them.
