Want to make a unique flag for your patriotic decor? If you have some chenille fabric, just grab some ribbon, blue fabric, and your hot glue and let me show you how to make a chenille American flag for your home!
Supplies needed for this diy:
- Chenille fabric
- Various red ribbons
- Blue and white patterned fabric
- Scissors
- Hot glue
Step one: Cut your chenille
I used a 6×4″ flag as my template to cut my flags out of the chenille. If you don’t have flags, just use those measurements to cut without a template. Make sure to begin and end with the non puffy lines, so you will be able to begin and end with a red stripe.

Step two: Cut your long red stripes
I just lined up my ribbon and cut each piece. You can always trim them after you glue them down.

The gingham ribbon is what I started with.

Then I went with some rick rack. I love this trim so much!

Our last red ribbon was this polka dot one.
Step three: Cut your blue fabric
I chose this paisley floral blue fabric to mimic the star part of my flag. It’s not traditional, but that’s ok.

Again, I used the 6×4 flag as a template for this part, too.

Part four: Cut your short red stripes:
Next, you’ll cut your short stripes out of the same red ribbon from before, unless you have several more different red ribbons. You could even use all the same ribbon if you want. It’s your project, so it’s up to you!

I started over with the gingham ribbon and cut the other two as well the same length. Then I ended with the gingham ribbon.

This is how they will lay out on our piece of chenille. It’s going to look so cute!
Step five: Start gluing on your ribbons
Now, you want to start gluing on your red stripes using hot glue. You could sew these on if you want, but hot glue works perfectly.

See here why I said to begin and end with the flat edges instead of the puffy lines? The puffy lines will serve as your white stripes.
Step six: Add your blue fabric
After you get your long strips glued on, attach your blue “star” section. Same deal here; hot glue, but slowly so you get a good seal.

Step seven: Add your short stripes
Last you will glue down your short stripes. And that’s it! How sweet is this flag?!

- You could use the flags as an applique by sewing them onto a pillow, a canvas, or a t-shirt!
