So, let me be honest. I started this project like my >>chunky loopy tree<< because I wanted a candy cane version of it. But… it did not turn out the way I wanted, so I ripped it all off and went in a completely different direction. So keep scrolling and don’t run away after seeing the photo below. Haha! Let me show you how to make a candy cane tree with chunky yarn!

Supplies Needed for this DIY :
- Cardboard, styrofoam, or posterboard cone
- Super chunky yarn in red and white
- Red or white felt or red or white paint (optional)
- Hot glue
- Scissors
Let’s Get Started!
The yarn that I used was from Hobby Lobby, Yarn Bee brand in red and white. That cardboard tree also came from Hobby Lobby. If you want to try the chunky loopy tree, you will want to first cover your tree base. You can paint it or cover it with felt. If you are wanting to make the candy cane stripes tree, there is no need to cover the tree base first.

First thing to do is decide what color goes first. I don’t think it matters, but I went with red first. Hot glue was used for this project. If you are using one color to make your tree, you will just make one continuous round. But since this is a striped tree, you will cut each piece to the appropriate length. You will have to eyeball each time and cut after starting to add your piece.

It was a little time consuming just because I glued the yarn down all the way around. You don’t want to skip this step though. It will assure that your stripes don’t slip or slide around.

Switch back and forth between your white and red as you make your way up the cardboard cone.
Also make sure your seam lines up on the back. The seam will be barely visible, but just in case, you want to have it all in one line so you can be sure your tree is always nice from the front.

I just love the way this is looking! Do you?? If so, make sure to leave a comment below and pin this to your pinterest boards!

See my seam? It’s visible, but it’s not bad. As long as you glue each end to each other, your seam won’t come apart. Don’t just glue it to the cardboard, actually glue the two pieces of yarn together where they meet.

The one negative to using this yarn is that it is very messy. Make sure to get rid of the loose pieces from each strand of yarn that you use each time. See my mess? Lol
Do you have any old cheese boxes or maybe hat boxes??
You won’t believe the transformation of this vintage cheese box that I found while antiquing during our annual Florida vacation! It looks amazing! See it >>HERE<< or click the picture below!

You can see the front and back of the tree here with the mirror. You can also see my daughter. She was keeping me company while I made this tree. 🙂

Tada! It’s all done! There are so many possibilities with this color combo! Candy cane, Cat in the Hat, etc. You can add embellishments if you wish, but I think I like it simple. It blends well with these snowmen that I picked up at Beall’s while we were in PCB this past October.

Thanks Ms Janet!!
Hi L’Briska. Love your projects. So far, I jave made cloth stuffed pumpkins, fall garland with wood beads and spools and currently making trees looped with chunky yarn. Just love the ideas. I also made a tree with trim from curtains that has beads. The trim was gifted to me. I look forward to trying more projects.
I am so happy that you are enjoying it here and that you have tried some of the projects! I bet that tree was adorable!

How many trees will one skeme of yarn make?
Depends on the size, but several trees per skein for sure!
Where did you get the tree form?
From Hobby Lobby!
Had not seen this one, I make a lot of trees myself
Glad you like that, Ms Deborah!
