Are your walls boring? Maybe you’re looking for some next level wall covering ideas! Have you ever thought about the brick look? As soon as I saw this technique done on a wall, I knew we had to give it a try in our own home! We had the perfect space to try it on, our front entryway. It’s a small wall, so it was perfect for our test pilot. So, let me show you how to create a diy faux brick wall so you can give your walls a refeshing makeover, too!

Let’s Get Started!

The first thing to do is to start adding your painters tape. To get our brick width, we spaced out the horizontal strips three inches apart. We used a yard stick to draw a straight line, with the help of a level to get it straight each time. Then we added the tape strips.

Our dog Bella was the foreman during this process. Lol Continue this process all the way down your wall.

Once we had the horizontal tape strips added, we started on the vertical strips, which were much shorter. We spaced those out seven inches apart and they were about four inch strips. To achieve our brick pattern, we just eyeballed the center of the top row. Then we measured seven inches in either direction, right and left, for our next pieces and so on.

Once we had those top two rows done, we just followed that pattern all the way down the wall.

This made our brick sections 7 inches long and 3 inches wide. This is not a particularly quick process, but it pays off, I promise. Keep at it. Take breaks if you need to.

Once all your tape is added to the wall, Tape over other exposed areas around the wall that might get paint or drywall mud on it. You can see here how we taped around the top of our banister where it met the wall. Also, the trim, some of the exposed steps, and the baseboard. We also laid down some cardboard to protect the floors and removed the outlet covers.

Our dog Harley decided he needed to test out the cardboard protection. It passed his inspection by the way. Our animals love to be involved and are hams for the camera. Lol

Time to Get Muddy!

Next step was the drywall compound. We added this very haphazardly to create the 3D brick texture. My husband struggled with this because his brain was telling him to make it smooth and even.

So, he turned it over to the queen of haphazard, ME! Haha!

After the wall is completely coated with the drywall compound, let it dry for about one hour. This is a tricky part, because you don’t want it too dry but you also don’t want it too wet still. Before you just start ripping it off, doublecheck to make sure it’s not taking any of the “brick” with it.

The hubby and I worked together to pull the tape off from opposite directions so it would be less messy and there would be less mistakes.

Let Your Bricks Dry Overnight

The next day, paint over your entire surface with white chalk paint. We used chalk paint because we wanted that matte finish.

More painting fun! Next, I painted each individual brick with a different color. I was going for a more colorful affect, so I used aqua and several shades of brown.

One color at a time.

Then I just filled in with each different shade of the brown the same way until the entire wall was covered.

The last step was to white wash the entire wall, covering the painted bricks and all. I did this with a large chip brush, adding paint to my brush, then wiping the excess off and using what was left on my brush to lightly coat the bricks. You don’t want to completely cover the brick color.

Once your white wash is completely dry, maybe a couple of hours, remove all your painter’s tape and enjoy your new faux brick wall! Now, go decide which wall is next! Lol

Doesn’t This Faux Brick Wall Look Fabulous?!

The Before & After! Wow!

I was going to add that pallet wood sign back to the wall, but because they are similarly white washed, they clashed, so I had to change up my wall decor just a bit. Our family sign now sits above our love seat instead.

Thanks for the reminder that having a cohesive color scheme is also essential when planning to make a faux brick wall. I’d like to know more about how to find a supplier of faux brick materials because I want to open a small restaurant business in the future. Being able to add quirky design elements to it will surely be ideal in the long run.
