Are you looking for some inexpensive Valentine’s decorating ideas to add to your farmhouse decor? If you’ve got twigs in your yard, you can craft this adorable farmhouse twig heart canvas! Perfect for your mantle or a jumbo ornament for a large Valentine’s tree or to just be part of a heart day themed vignette.

Supplies needed for this project :

  • 8×10″ canvas (Dollar Tree)
  • Random sticks from the outdoors
  • White and black acrylic paints (Walmart for $0.50 each) and brushes
  • A toothbrush
  • Twine
  • Hot glue gun and glue
  • Buffalo plaid ribbon
  • Heart button
  • Greenery – I used lamb’s ear (Walmart for $2.00)
  • Optional embellishments (wooden swirl picks)

First Step – Let’s get twiggy wit it! 😂

I’m an 80’s/90’s music lover if you didn’t get the reference! 😉

After you’ve gathered your twigs, line them up in the shape of a heart. Break the sticks as you place them to create your heart shape. Once you have all of them in place, you can start to add them one at a time to your canvas, using your hot glue.

You will end up with something like this.

Next, build up your heart by adding twigs to the empty spots and add a twine border.

Next Step – Paint!

Using white acrylic paint, cover the twigs lightly.

With black acrylic paint, add splatters and streaks to the canvas. I used a toothbrush to add the splatters. Just dip your brush into the paint and use your thumb to rub across the bristles, creating a spray affect. I then made streaks horizontally on the canvas to mimic a birch tree bark.

Last Step

The last thing to do is add some greenery, a farmhouse bow, and other optional embellishments. I like lamb’s ear a lot and have been using it quite a bit in my farmhouse decor, and I think it looks great on this piece as well!

The last thing I added was a white button to the center of the bow and some wooden swirls to finish it off. What do you think of our farmhouse twig heart canvas project? Let us know in the comments below!

What are the wood swirls you used and are they something you purchaded?

    1. JRandLBriska

I actually found those at a thrift shop in a bundle, but yes you can get them at any craft store; Hobby Lobby, Joann, etc. They are floral picks.
