Supplies needed for this project :

  • Screwdriver
  • Staple remover
  • Staple gun
  • Chalk paint
  • Paste wax
  • Burlap fabric or fabric of choice
  • Painter’s tape
  • Chalk paint brush and wax brush
  • Scissors
  • Fiberfill (optional)

1. Remove the Cushion

The first thing you want to do is remove the cushion. Usually it has been screwed onto the legs, and you can find this out by turning over the bench. You can see here where the screws are under this one. Once you have unscrewed all of these, your cushion should separate from the legs.

2. Remove the Fabric from the Cushion

Using a staple remover, remove the staples from the bottom of the cushion. I like this Bostitch Staple remover, because it’s magnetic and that helps with staple cleanup.

The fiberfill that was under this fabric was still in good condition, so I left it intact. If you need to replace yours, that is easily replaced. You can get it at any craft store and even Walmart. Old pillows are also great for recycling the fiberfill. Just make sure to spread it out evenly over the entire surface of the board used for the cushion.

3. Cut a New Piece of Fabric

I wanted this bench to have a farmhouse style, so I used burlap fabric for the cushion. You can use the fabric that you have taken off the original cushion to help measure for a new piece of fabric. Your cut does not have to be perfect either. Didn’t I tell you this was super simple??

4. Add the New Fabric to the Cushion

Start by laying the board with the fiberfill onto the piece of fabric and center it.

Staple one side at a time, going next to the opposite side, then to the adjacent sides. Finally, staple the corners, pulling tight during this entire process.

5. Paint the Legs to the Bench

Either before or after you reupholster the cushion, paint the legs to the bench seat using chalk paint. I use chalk paint because the coverage is much better than most paints, and you can see that process >>HERE<< when we painted our kitchen table. The color that I chose was called Stormy Seas by 2 Chicks & a Toolbelt. It’s a vintage blue color. 6. Add any Additional Details

To add the stripes, I used painter’s tape and applied it directly onto the fabric, leaving a space like shown to paint the stripe.

I used the same paint color as the legs. Just paint directly onto the burlap.

Once the first stripe is painted, remove the tape and replace it where you can add a second and third stripe.

7. Add the Cushion to the Painted Legs

Once you’ve added any embellishments or details, add the cushion back to the legs using the same screws that you removed at first. Wow! What a difference! Enjoy your new farmhouse bench seat!
