Do you love decorating for each holiday but you’re on a budget? If you’re looking for some DIY Valentine’s craft ideas, and you picked up some of the large wooden heart shapes from the Dollar Tree, give them a shabby chic makeover! Then add them to your farmhouse decor!

This is what you will need to transform this Dollar Tree wooden heart

  • Wooden heart shape from the Dollar Tree
  • Paint: Pink, black and white, or gray – I use Apple Barrel brand from Walmart
  • Roses from Dollar Tree
  • Burlap ribbon with black dot from Dollar Tree
  • Various size ribbon in pink, gray, black, and white.
  • Hot glue gun and glue
  • Picture stand

I snagged a couple of these wooden hearts from the Dollar Tree and decided I wanted to use one for our Valentine’s mantel decor!

This was a farmhouse heart, so I used a combo of white and black paint to make a shade of gray that I liked.

Cover the entire heart in your base gray color.

Then use just white and black to add texture and definition. Last, add your pink, because, well, it’s a heart!

Next, I added a cute shabby chic farmhouse style bow! We, in the crafter’s world, call this the Re-Fabbed bow. If you know Brooke over at Re-Fabbed, you’ve seen these. This is your basic progression of one.

These are the ribbons that I used. Very farmhouse shabby chic, don’t ya think?

After you cut your ribbon strips (about 6 inches each), start layering them.

After you have them just the way you like, use another ribbon to tie them together. Lay that ribbon perpendicular across the criss crossed ribbons.

Then turn it all over and tie it around the back.

Glue your bow to the heart and you end up with something like this!

Last thing to do is add a single rose to the bottom. You can add more, but I think one is enough. Less is more here. Once your rose is adhered, your Dollar Tree wooden heart shabby chic farmhouse makeover is complete! This looks great on our farmhouse Valentine’s mantel, but would look great other places, too! Maybe on an entryway table as part of a Valentine’s vignette, or on a sofa table or shelf! It would even look great on your kitchen table with some fresh roses alongside!
