Do you have a lot of ribbon in your craft stash? If you’re here, you’re looking for a way to store that ribbon. I have an answer for you and you can make it yourself! Check out this Diy Ribbon Holder that you can have ready in just a few hours! Check out our other Diy Projects while you’re here!
Supplies needed for this project :
- A 2×4″ piece of wood for the sides
- Two 1×6″ pieces of wood for the top and bottom
- A 1×8″ piece of wood to stabilize the bottom
- Several 3/8″ thick wooden dowels
- A 3/8″ drill and screws
- A circular saw
- Wood glue
- A measuring tape
- A speed square for accuracy (optional, but advised)
Step one : Cut Your Wood Pieces to Your Size Specifications
Our bottom and top pieces were made from 1×6″ pieces of wood cut to about 18″ long. We used a speed square to make our marks more accurate.
Then we used our Dewalt circular saw to cut them.
Step two : Drill the Dowel Holes
After we cut our 2×4’s to our specified height of 48 inches (4 ft), we laid out spools of ribbon on the piece of wood to see how many holes we needed and how they needed to be space out. We decided on 12 holes, but they were not all spaced out the same width, because it was just dependent on the ribbon spool. So yours will be just as varied, so I don’t want to give you a specific measurement here.
As you can see, we used a pencil to trace the circle of the inside of the ribbon spool where we sat it and that is where we drilled our holes. First, we doubled up the boards from both sides, using a screw to hold them together, so we would be drilling in the exact same spot on each side.
The drill bit that we used was 3/8″ and we also used 3/8″ wooden dowels that we cut to 18″ as well.
Step three : Put it all together
First, we centered the two 2×4’s on either side of the bottom 1×6″ piece and traced around them. Then we added some wood glue where we traced.
We stood the 2×4’s up, inserted one of the dowels to help find the appropriate width and then placed the 1×6″ piece on top, lining it up with our traced areas. Using screws, we attached the pieces together. We did this to the top and the bottom.
Step four : Add some stability
I don’t have a picture for this step, but basically we lined up a 1×8″ piece of wood the same exact length as the bottom and attached it to the bottom piece. It just adds a little more stability, so your DIY Ribbon Holder is not top heavy once you get your ribbon on it. You can see the bottom piece in this picture below.
And that’s it! Now all you have to do is add your ribbon. Just slide your dowels into one side and place your ribbon rolls onto it until you fill it up. Then slide the dowel into the other side and let it rest there. When you want some ribbon, just push your dowel out one side and slide off the ribbon that you need and then replace the dowel back into the side. You will have to remove multiple rolls to get to the middle of course, but it’s better than having a tote of ribbon to dig through, which is what I had before. Ain’t nobody got time for that!
I hope you found this tutorial helpful and that it inspires you to get more creative about your craft room organization! It sure has helped me! But now I need more of them, because again, I have a tote full of extra ribbon. Lol While you’re here, check out the other ideas below and make sure to join our email family so we can keep in touch!
