If you’ve ever spotted an old, outdated cabinet at a thrift store and wondered what you could possibly do with it, this project is for you! In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to turn a dated cabinet into a charming farmhouse display piece with just a few simple updates. This DIY Farmhouse Cabinet Makeover with Chicken Wire and Fabric Backing is budget-friendly, beginner-friendly, and bursting with charm. Let’s walk through the full process step-by-step!

Step 1: Disassemble and Clean the Cabinet

Before diving into the fun part, take a few minutes to prep the cabinet:

  • Remove the door and any hardware (like knobs and hinges).
  • Take out the shelving if possible.
  • Clean all surfaces thoroughly with a gentle degreaser or warm soapy water. This will help the paint adhere better.

Step 2: Paint All Surfaces

For a classic farmhouse look, we opted for a soft two-tone finish using chalk-style paint. You could go with light gray and white, soft sage green, creamy linen, or any neutral that fits your space.

  • Apply 1–2 coats of paint to the exterior, door frame, shelves, and sides.
  • Let dry between coats, and lightly sand if needed for a smooth finish.
  • Don’t forget to paint the knob for a cohesive look!

Style Tip: Distress the edges lightly with sandpaper to give the piece that worn, vintage farmhouse feel.

Step 3: Add Fabric to the Back Panel

To give the interior of your cabinet that extra farmhouse charm, line the back with fabric. We used a French country-inspired fabric featuring roosters and script.

  • Measure the inside back panel of the cabinet.
  • Cut your fabric to size using sharp fabric scissors.
  • Use a thin layer of decoupage medium or spray adhesive to attach it, smoothing it carefully to avoid wrinkles or bubbles.

Style Tip: Choose fabric that complements your kitchen or living space—buffalo check, ticking stripe, or botanical prints work great!

Step 4: Add Chicken Wire to the Door

Nothing says “farmhouse” like chicken wire!

  • Carefully remove the glass or leave it out if already missing.
  • Cut a piece of chicken wire slightly larger than the door opening.
  • Use wire cutters and gloves to avoid sharp edges.
  • Staple or tack the chicken wire to the inside of the door frame, pulling it taut as you go.

Style Tip: You can spray paint the chicken wire a soft matte black or oil-rubbed bronze for extra contrast.

Step 5: Reassemble the Cabinet

Once everything is dry and set:

  • Check the hinges for smooth operation and adjust if needed.
  • Reattach the door, knob, and any shelves.
Completed farmhouse cabinet makeover with gray paint, chicken wire door, and farmhouse print fabric backing.

Now you have a beautifully refreshed cabinet perfect for displaying spice jars, farmhouse mugs, rolled tea towels, or small decor pieces.

Create Your Own Farmhouse Style

This project is a great example of how a little creativity and effort can transform a cast-off into a conversation piece. Here are a few more ways you can personalize your cabinet:

  • Add vintage-style hooks inside for hanging keys or measuring spoons.
  • Use peel-and-stick wallpaper instead of fabric for a different look.
  • Stencil the sides or interior shelves for a bit of flair.
  • Display it on your countertop, wall-mount it, or set it on a buffet.
