I recently saw some fabric reindeer in a department store and they were quite pricey, so I decided to try to make them myself! I had some leftover buffalo plaid fabric in my stash, and I had just picked up a gorgeous green piece of fabric at Goodwill for $0.99! I used the two fabrics to make a reindeer duo!
What you will need for this project
- Reindeer template
- Fabric of choice
- Polyester fiberfill
- Wooden dowels
- Brown Paint
- Buttons
- A nose (I used a glitter foam ball from a package of vase filler from DT)
- Embellishments for the scarf
- Greenery for the antlers
- Glue gun and glue
The first thing I did was find a deer body template online. I used a photo editing app called PhotoGrid to separate it into three parts so I could increase the size. You may be able to find a ready made template online that allows you to print on multiple sheets, but I just made one myself. You could also just draw your own onto a poster board. I’ve included the printables. You will have to trim the edges a bit to cut out any remaining parts showing from the legs, ears, and tail.

Print these on full size sheets of paper and then cut them out and tape them together to make a large template. See the pictures below. You can see how I trimmed the edges here.

Next, you will use the fabric of your choice and cut two deer bodies. If you are using two sided fabric, you can just layer the two pieces of fabric and cut once, but if you are using one sided fabric, you will need to cut twice, turning the deer on the second piece of fabric.

Before you start gluing your deer body together, you need to paint your wooden dowels a dark brown. You can certainly leave them the natural color, but I chose to paint them. This will give them enough time to dry.

After your dowels are painted, you will start to hot glue your pieces together. Yes, I said hot glue!! This is a no sew project! You can sew it if you want, though! After you get the head glued together, start stuffing your piece. You want to stuff it pretty full as you will want it to stand up eventually, so stuff it as much as you can. Keep stuffing and gluing until you’ve completely enclosed your deer body.

After your deer body is stuffed, you are going to attach your legs. They should be dry by now. You will snip small holes in the bottom of your deer body, where your legs will go. You will insert your glue gun into the holes and fill them with as much glue as you can. You will then insert your dowel and hold it there until the glue is set. Do this for all four legs. I did two at a time, holding the two legs together to glue them to each other inside of the deer body. I was not able to get a picture of how I did this, so I hope you can understand my instructions. After the legs were set, I started adding the scarf. I used the opposite color for each deer. I just cut a strip from the fabric and tied it around the neck and glued it into place.

Then I added the embellishments to the scarf. I added pieces from an old wreath.

Then I added the ears. I snipped a small hole where I would place the ears. I freehanded ears on the cooresponding fabric and cut them out. I folded them to make an ear. I did the same for the tail.

Next, I added the button eyes.

Last step was to add the antlers. Again, I used leftover greenery from another project. I snipped holes, applied some hot glue onto the stem and stuck them into the deer head, next to the ears and voila! Your deer is complete!
