Do you decorate your home for the winter months? I’m always kind of sad after taking down our Christmas decor, so I started decorating for winter! Some of the things that I use in my winter decor are neutral trees, snowflakes, and snowmen. I’m showing you how to make this chunky yarn snowflake tree that will look amazing on a mantel!
Supplies needed for this DIY:
- Cardboard cone
- Chunky yarn
- wooden snowflakes
- Greenery
- Diamond Dust
- Mod Podge
- Hot glue and scissors
I used a cardboard cone from Hobby Lobby, but you could use a styrofoam cone or even a handmade cone made from a piece of posterboard.
Chunky yarn can be found at Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Joann or Michael’s!
Start by gluing your yarn onto the very bottom edge of your cone. Make sure to glue it all the way around.
When you get back around to the beginning of the yarn, pull your yarn above the beginning yarn and continue looping it around the cone.
You don’t have to glue it all the way around. Just make sure to add some glue every now and then.
Every so often, press downwards on the yarn to make sure it’s tight against the cone.
Once you get to the top of the cone, add quite a bit of glue and cover the rest with your chunky yarn.
I wasn’t going to add yarn to the bottom, but I wanted to add greenery and this helps it to show more.
I started it the same way I started the main part of the tree.
After you wrap the sides of the bottom, continue gluing the yarn onto the very bottom until you meet the rest of the yarn.
You don’t have to do this next step, but I like to have a contrasting color sometimes. This boxwood greenery was the perfect choice I thought.
Hot glue was what I used to attach the greenery. I bent the greenery stems to go around the bottom of the tree.
The Yummiest Cookie Ever!
You don’t need much, just enough to accent.
Now to decide where I want my snowflakes. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to leave the tree plain, if I wanted to add one snowflake, or multiple snowflakes.
There were only four left in a package from the Dollar Tree, so I had to be careful where I placed them. This is what I decided on.
My next decision was whether or not I wanted to paint the snowflakes. I decided to just add some diamond dust instead.
Have you ever used diamond dust? It is crushed glass used like glitter and looks fabulous on your glitter projects!
Using hot glue, I attached the snowflakes onto the tree to finish it off.
Pin this project to save it!
I hope you enjoyed this diy and that it inspires you to do something similar for your home! Make sure to join our email family to see what we’re up to each week!
