I was looking for different ideas for our >>neutral tree<<, so I created these embroidery hoop ornaments using burlap and gingham ribbon! They are too simple but are so adorable! I’ve included all of the details for this farmhouse style Christmas Tree Embroidery Hoop Ornament! Make sure to check out our other Christmas diys while you’re here.
Supplies needed for this project:
- Embroidery hoops
- Burlap fabric
- 3/8″ ribbon
- Darning needle
- Hot glue
- Scissors
- Jute twine
You can get this size embroidery hoop from Walmart or any craft store, but if you want to use them for multiple projects or to make multiple ornaments (these make great craft fair items), they also have them in bulk on Amazon. I usually get my burlap in 10 yard bolts from Joann, because I use so much of it.

Measure your embroidery hoop and cut a square of your burlap about one inch larger than your hoop.

Separate your embroidery hoop parts and lay your burlap on top of the solid piece.

Next, lay the other piece of the hoop on top of the burlap, making sure to twist open the metal tightener.

Press the top hoop down over the fabric covered hoop, making sure the burlap is tight. Then tighten up the metal twist closure.

After your burlap is added and the hoop is tightened, turn the hoop over and cut off the excess burlap.

You can do this before or after you add your ribbon tree. Up to you!

The ribbon that I used was black and white gingham to go with our black and white tree, but you use whatever color you would like. Green ribbon would be fun!

Using an darning needle, which is just a larger needle that is used in crochet, start threading your ribbon through the openings in your burlap. I started at the bottom, getting as close to the hoop as I could. Insert one end of the ribbon through the back, pull it across the bottom, insert into the other side, through the front to the back, then back out the very next opening in the burlap. You can see how I did this above.

Now, you will bring the ribbon back across the burlap and insert it a little before where your first ribbon started.

Then back out in the very next opening to the left of where you just inserted.

Just continue this process all the way up the tree until you reach a point where you can’t do it anymore.

Once you insert the ribbon at the very top, cut your ribbon and glue it onto the back of the burlap. Same for the other end of the ribbon at the bottom.

If you have cut off the excess burlap already, just add a jute hanger, and your ornament is complete!
