One of my favorite things to make are garlands! I also love the vintage C9 lights! This project combines the two! I hope this inspires you to make one of your own!
Supplies needed for this project :
- Burlap fabric
- Christmas lights printable template >>Here’s one<<
- Paint in various colors
- Tree bark
- Jute twine
- Letter stencils
- White paint
- Hot glue
I found this Christmas light printable online, and I printed several different sizes of it until I found just the right size for this project!
After deciding that I wanted to use something else for the light caps, I cut the top part off of the printable and used what was left to cut out 14 “bulbs” out of burlap.
Then I started painting them.
I used seven different colors, two of each color.
Make sure you have something underneath your burlap, because the paint will seep right through.
I painted both sides of the burlap bulbs.
You’re going to have some fraying around the edges, but wait until you’ve painted them to trim them up.
The burlap will really suck up the paint, so you might want to go heavy on it.
Also, the paint will create a heavier “bulb” and that will help weigh the garland down properly.
See how the edges are frayed? Just use some heavy duty scissors to trim those up.
Next, I added some letters to my bulbs with these letter stencils that I bought from Walmart.
You definitely want to use a sticky stencil for this project.
Using my white paint and a homemade stencil brush (I just cut down an old brush), I added letters to each bulb.
I thought this one kind of looked like an M&M, don’t you think? Lol
The 14 bulbs were just enough to add the words Merry Christmas!
I always love adding a natural element to my projects if I can, so I used tree bark from our property for this garland!
Look how fun!!
You may have to use heavy duty scissors or wire cutters to trim the bark down to the right shape and size.
Last up, I added the bulbs to about five feet of jute twine using hot glue.
It’s not pretty, so if you wanted to add another layer of the burlap onto the back, that would give it a more finished look. You could also just add the jute before adding your bark.
Either way, the front of your garland is going to look amazing!
